Newcastle Bars and Pubs Lead the Way with Shout-Up! Certification AS 78% OF WOMEN EXPERIENCE HARASSMENT

Newcastle's nightlife is taking a significant step forward in ensuring a safer and more enjoyable environment for everyone as more venues and promoters secure a Shout-Up! certification.

FRATE Newcastle is the latest venue to achieve its Shout-Up! certifcation. Nestled in a courtyard just off High Bridge, FRATE hosts a range of local street food vendors and bars. They have become the 53rd certification in the city in the last 12 months.

And a recent poll highlights the critical need for even more bars and pubs in Newcastle to become certified by Shout-Up!, an initiative dedicated to combating sexual harassment in nightlife venues by training staff to understand and intervene safely.

Key Findings from the Shout-Up! polling amongst men and women in Newcastle upon Tyne

High Incidence of Sexual Harassment

The poll reveals alarming statistics, with 71% of respondents reporting that they have experienced sexual harassment on a night out. The breakdown by gender shows this changes to 78% for women and 36% for men. 63% of all respondents have seen someone else being sexually harassed on a night out.

Positive Reception of Shout-Up! certification

The Shout-Up! initiative, which provides free training to nightlife staff to recognise and intervene in cases of sexual harassment, received overwhelming support from respondents. 97% of those asked thought this type of training for bar staff was a good idea, with 91% indicating they would feel safer and happier in venues where staff had undergone Shout-Up! training.

Why Shout-Up! Certification Matters

Shout-Up! wants nights out to be safe and fun for everyone

Certification through Shout-Up! ensures that bar and pub staff are equipped with the skills to handle and prevent incidents of sexual harassment effectively. This not only enhances the safety of the venue but also promotes a more welcoming and stress-free atmosphere, encouraging more people to enjoy Newcastle's vibrant nightlife and stay longer in the city centre.

Shout-Up! helps build trust and confidence in the nighttime economy

The data shows that patrons are significantly more likely to feel comfortable and happy in venues where they know staff are trained to deal with harassment. Leading to increased patronage and a positive reputation for certified venues.

Community Commitment

By becoming Shout-Up! certified, bars and pubs demonstrate a commitment to the wellbeing of their community.

We urge all bars and pubs in Newcastle to join us! If you’re a licensed premises with a late-night license and located within the Newcastle City Council geography, you may be able to participate for free, find out more here.
